Once they gambled for the title of Britain’s most awkward band – guilty, by their own admission, of pandering to public tastes following their move from Pompey to London: today, however, the Lux Hotels have created an identity bold and brilliant, hyper-recognizable on their brilliant and hyper-humable debut album “Hands Across The Creek”. Maybe it was enough just to destroy their dreams of glory?
Celebrity anxieties aside, Hotel Lux – formed by vocalist Lewis Duffin, guitarist Sam Coburn, drummer Craig MacVicar and new members Max Oliver (guitar) and Dillon Home (organ; violin) – found themselves on a path to success in 2020, thanks to the release of the EP “Barstool Preaching”.
The usual Iggy Pop was singing their praises on the radio and the band themselves were preparing for their big break in America (SXSW Festival). Then, the world shut down and their US debut was cancelled. “We were gutted,” recalls Lewis. “Everything had been pretty exciting for us up until that point.”
Now, in 2023, Hotel Lux looks set to become something their early critics could not have foreseen: a band filled with self-confidence, with the ability to blaze a trail for their peers and the ability to carve out their own. corner in the British music scene, confirming that he is among the heirs of Albion punk music.
