Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer Natalie Bergman announces her second solo album, My Home Is Not In This World, due out July 18 through Third Man Records.
The record is preceded by the release of the single “Gunslinger,” accompanied by a cinematic video directed by Andreas Ekelund: a genre-defying desert anthem introducing the hypnotic sound palette of the record, whose video features American writer, director and musician Ian Svenonius (The Make-Up, Escape-ism).
If someone were to reconstruct and reinvent Motown in the California desert, the sound could certainly resemble that of My Home Is Not In This World. Recorded entirely analog on tape and produced by her brother and longtime collaborator Elliot Bergman, the 12-track album sparkles with gospel soul, country-western melancholy and rock ‘n’ roll grit, all filtered through Natalie’s unmistakable voice. “The title is an homage to my longing for somewhere else,” Natalie reveals. “It represents my desire not to be part of what is happening in the digital world and where I have tried to be the antithesis of a lot of contemporary music. There are earthbound sounds and many songs are about love. At the same time, it talks about finding my place in the world, even though I never really felt that I belonged to this one we live in.”
Leading the way is the single “Gunslinger,” in which Natalie’s smoky voice stretches over a ghostly guitar line, cinematic strings, and a slowly growing groove, evoking classic Western soundtracks and old-time soul. The text is about longing and draws a portrait of unrequited love: either for someone unattainable, or perhaps, much more likely for a place that does not really exist.
Following his acclaimed 2021 solo debut, Mercy, steeped in mourning and spiritual reflection because it was written following the tragic loss of his father and stepmother, My Home Is Not In This World was born as a celebration of new life and rebirth. In fact, Natalie gave birth to her son, Arthur, in 2024, and the experience of motherhood has etched so much into her music, transforming it into something both tender and transcendent.
Bergman’s solo work and his first album Mercy have received wide critical acclaim, with major accolades from NPR and Rolling Stone. With My Home Is Not In This World, Natalie gets even deeper into the heart of her personal mythology, rooted in lived experience but elevated by an almost otherworldly grace. Constantly evolving, Natalie Bergman is ready to touch hearts, shake spirits and remind us where our home really is, or where it is not.
