The Louisville trio appreciated globally since its inception for its ability to reinvent the languages of post-punk with a dreamy, experimental streak, is about to return to the scenes with DANGER IN FIVES, its fourth and highly anticipated album, scheduled for releaseAug. 8 on Fire Talk Records.
Anticipated by the release of the single “Neon Bog” and the title track, released along with a psychedelic-tinged video clip directed by Cameron Lowe, the band’s guitarist, Danger in Fives is an album that not only confirms the mastery achieved in 2022 with the previous Fairy Rust, but also amplifies and sublimates the free spirit characteristic of the band’s early days, and particularly accentuated in Blossomlooksdownuponus, a successful and acclaimed second album (and first on Fire Talk Records) released in 2020.
“Perfectly at home in atmospheres of dark escapism” [Pitchfork], Sydney Chadwick (bass and vocals), Cameron Lowe (guitar) and Joel Taylor (drums) form a trio with a strong sonic personality, characterized by continuous stylistic evolution and total openness to exploring new sonic universes. In the two years between the last record and the release of the new one, Wombo have performed on countless stages around the world, increasingly perfecting their ability to retain the deep stylistic signature of their music even on stage.
The 11 tracks of Danger in Fives arise from and enhance Wombo’s enchanting alchemy, firmly pushing the band into new territories.“I don’t want to be part of a band that limits itself to one genre of writing,” Chadwick claims. “Where is the fun, creativity and exploration in this? We want to push the envelope and try something new.”
Indeed, with Danger in Fives, the Wombo pull off another perfect score and come out creatively renewed. This quest for the new, along with the need for reinforcement and the continual rediscovery of their art, has earned Wombo an authentic and deeply respected reputation in the community of musicians and fans in the independent scene, and Danger in Fives has the virtue of firmly palpating what has actually made them one of the most respected bands of a type in the scene, namely their original interpretation of post-punk, characterized by a looming darkness, about which Chadwick jokes that it is “inevitable” in their music.
This time, the process of experimentation that culminated in Danger in Five is accompanied by subtle changes in Wombo’s color palette, such as the addition of digital textures and a drum machine embedded in a handful of tracks.
BIOGRAPHY
Wombo is an art-rock and post-punk trio from Louisville, Kentucky, consisting of Sydney Chadwick (vocals and bass), Cameron Lowe (guitar) and Joel Taylor (drums). Active since 2016, Wombo have built a unique trajectory for themselves, moving naturally between the most nervous post-punk, the most visionary art-rock, and a skewed pop made up of hypnotic melodies, angular riffs, and atmospheres suspended between restlessness and lightness.
Their sound evokes suggestions of Broadcast, Deerhoof and The Raincoats, but filtered through a contemporary sensibility and a constant desire to experiment with new forms and languages. They alternate moments of dark escapism and electric tension with more rarefied and dreamy passages, always led by Chadwick’s voice, capable of being fragile and powerful at the same time.
After their debut with Staring at Trees and their long-distance debut Blossomlooksdownuponus in 2018, Wombo released two EPs(Keesh Mountain in 2021 and Slab in 2023) and the album Fairy Rust in 2022, with which they found their first definitive maturity, on the New York label Fire Talk Records. OnAugust 8, 2025, comes the new album Danger in Fives, the fourth official chapter in their discography, marking a further stylistic evolution.
Considered among the most interesting and respected names in the American independent scene, Wombo have built a solid reputation thanks to an instinctive, curious and out-of-the-box attitude that has led them over the years to refine their formula without ever ceasing to question it.
Words as if they were liquid, as if they were puddles filled with ink. The unbridgeable gap between the sound of the word and the silence of writing. Music that tastes like chewed aluminum foil.
Liquid Words is a project born in Brescia in 2021. From the start, they have been committed to a sonic exploration moving between the most “art” side of post-punk and noise rock. At times, the quartet’s compositions venture into territories with echoes of dark, chaotic, almost psychedelic no-jazz.
Their debut album, The Dept. Of Corrections Praises Imperfections, dates back to November 2024, self-produced by the band and released via Kandinsky Records.
