One of the most interesting new mysteries of English music: Bar Italia simply define themselves as a “London-based band”.
The minimal post-punk aesthetic and a truly elusive presence on social media have paradoxically made the band, composed of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton recognizable.
Prior to joining the band, Nina Cristante released a number of lo-fi pop songs under the pseudonym Nina, while Fehmi and Fenton released a grunge-inspired EP under the name Double Virgo.
Together, Bar Italia create a sound that recalls the experimental rock of the nineties, as in the irresistible and raw “Nurse!”. Their single, “punkt”, is “acted” by each member and showcases the band’s sound of rough vocals, emotionality and biting instrumental parts.
oth songs appear on Bar Italia’s new debut album, “Tracey Denim” (Matador), a record that revolves around themes of troubled identity and unstable relationships, expressing the existential angst felt with stumbling into the world without any sense of belonging.
